Claude Monet’s Waterloo Bridge, Veiled Sun (1903) makes the symbol explicit: the sun, reduced to a small golden point above the bridge parapet, is filtered by London’s atmosphere. This veiling allows atmosphere to overtake architecture—the bridge’s cool violet arches dissolve into a vibrating color field—so the sun functions as both timekeeper and emblem of natural power held in check by the modern city, fragile yet persistent.
