Signature cartouches (seal blocks) Symbolism
Signature cartouches, or seal blocks, are framed devices that present an artist’s name or mark as part of the composition. They draw on long traditions of stamped seals, notably Japanese hanko, and on cartouche formats that turn text into ornament. By enclosing authorship within a designed field, they function as both identification and a graphic element.
