Why this detail?

The Reflections Change the Room

The wall mirror quietly changes everything in Las Meninas. It reflects the king and queen, but places them at the back of the room, small and uncertain. Are they standing where we stand, or are they the painter’s unseen subjects? Velázquez uses this modest rectangle to unsettle the whole scene. Power appears as reflection, and the viewer becomes part of the painting’s system of looking.

Interpretation

The mirror makes the viewer question who is looking at whom.

Context

The royal reflection places monarchy inside the room without giving it the center.

Technique

Velázquez uses a small bright rectangle to reorder the painting’s entire space.
